Q&A: How can you stop anxiety attacks?

How can you stop anxiety attacks?
I’ve had a problem for the past few years with anxiety- whenever I get nervous, I start to feel sick to my stomach.
I’ve seen a therapist and for the most part, my anxiety went away, but whenever I see my best friend who I rarely see, I start getting anxiety again. I’m always queezy in the first place because of my feelings, but it makes it even harder.
How can I stop this? How can I calm myself down?

This will sound so cliche but really, breathing deeply and slowly really does help. You can count backward from 20 in your head, too. Deep breathing will naturally lower your heart rate and help with t he anxious feelings.

If you’ve been seeing a therapist, it’s unlikely you’ll find anyone here who knows any better.
Anxiety attacks generally relate to unresolved issues in your life that you need to address. Your therapist has probably already taken you there. That’s where the answer lies, but there are various methods of controlling the symptoms. Anxiety attacks are the result of your body suddenly producing large amounts of a hormone called noradrenaline that makes you hyperactive, disorientated and upsets your digestion. This is a handy reaction if you are in the jungle and come face to face with a lion, but a bit of a nuisance if you live in town.
The chemical approach is to use tranquillisers or beta blockers. These both reduce your body’s ability to produce noradrenaline. However, tranquillisers slow you down and can be habit forming and beta blockers give you strange dreams and stop you getting excited.
Relaxation exercises are also very good. These teach you to control the way your body produces noradrenaline. They don’t stop the anxiety, but they put you back in control (and they’re cheaper than drugs). I won’t spell out how to do them here, there are plenty of sites on the internet. Basically you force yourself to relax all of the muscles in your body in turn. Fully relaxed; there’s no noradrenaline - hey the lion can eat me. You can also buy a CD from the pharmacy.
Have you had your sugar level checked? and sodium I always had these little attacks and went to by family doctor and I had low blood sugar and low sodium, do you take meds for depression or anxiety? and sometimes we get a little anxiety around people we know is there a problem between you and your friend? do you worry you have to act a certain way around that person? and can`t just be yourself, do a mental check on yourself, how do you really feel before you meet this person and how do you feel right when you start to speak to them, what changed? or you afraid? worried? just things like that… I`v been through all of this and I am doing pretty good today and take some medications.
