panic stop

panic stop
My entry for day 302 of the 2009photochallenge; the theme for the day was PANIC.
When drivers panic, they inevitably step on the brakes. Sometimes this works out well, sometimes not. As a cyclist, I’ve learned to look for brake lights as one among several warnings of imminently erratic behavior from cars. As an ode to panic, then, here is the center high mount stop light (and its reflection on the trunk) of a car.
Funny story about these. Apparently they were introduced in the late 1970s by researchers who were concerned about rear-end collisions, which are, almost by definition, collisions that happen when the rear driver is looking at but not paying attention to the car in front. Adding these center high mount stop lights turned out to be incredibly effective in reducing rear end accidents in lab simulations, which seemed great. So car manufacturers began putting them in all new cars. But then, once drivers became acclimated to the things, they stopped paying attention to them, and the reduction of rear end accidents found in the lab pretty much disappeared entirely. Moral: you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it persist in capturing visual attention after the novelty wears off.
